Letters to the editor | Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021: Devin Nunes and Donald Trump
Farewell, congressman
With the possibility he will lose his congressional seat in next year’s election, Devin Nunes tucks his tail between his legs and runs off to join his master, Donald Trump. Good riddance! Don’t let the door hit you when you leave, Devin.

Pass spending bill, Senate
The Build Back Better Act recently passed through the U.S. House with the support of Rep. Josh Harder, and this is a great thing for the Central Valley. It will bring jobs and economic growth to the region, not to mention cleaning up the air that we breathe.
As a local leader in Modesto who works with transportation companies up and down the Valley, I know that federal investments in the BBB Act are key to our region’s future. By investing billions to drive down the cost of electric vehicles on our roads and farms, developing more vehicle chargers in our communities, and supporting workforce development, this plan will bring good jobs, make clean vehicles more accessible for all income levels, and clean up local air.
There are already clean-energy workers in every state, including 5,397 here in Harder’s district. And there will be even more jobs once the BBB Act passes into law.
By addressing climate change, we’ll also avoid the impacts of wildfire smoke and drought, not to mention numerous other weather disasters which cost us $100 billion in 2020 alone.
I urge the Senate to pass the Build Back Better Act into law.

Cost of miscalculating
George Orwell’s “1984” correctly predicted Trump’s four-year reign of despotic autocracy. Big Brother’s Thought Police enforced the state’s mantra that 2+2=5. Trump’s thought police — GOP governors, senators, and congressmen — made sure that his continuous thread of unabashed lies were accepted as truth and were not to be questioned. 2+2=5.
Trump’s most arrogant lie, that he won the 2020 election, resulted in his Jan. 6 failed coup attempt to stop the peaceful constitutional transfer of presidential leadership. Republicans called this deadly day of infamy a “peaceful, friendly gathering of supporters.” 2+2=5.
The COP has been eliminating registered Democrats from voting rosters with their brazen Jim Crow legislation, opening doors for Trump-backed candidates to easily sweep the mid-terms, paving the way for a disastrous return of Trump and his lies.
Our country cannot afford another four-year reign of Big Brother.
Trump Big Lie supporters must now place their country first. They must free their Trump-infected minds, grow spines, and finally realize that we live in a society where 2+2 does not equal 5.

Scale down U.S. military
We wonder why the Russians are moving troops to their border with Ukraine? Because the U.S. has moved equipment and soldiers into Ukraine, and several years ago we overthrew a democratically elected government in Ukraine and installed neo-Nazis of our choice. Think how we would react if Russia began moving war material and troops into Mexico.
When Afghanistan ended, it ended a real cash cow for defense contractors and the military. They need another war to keep the money flowing; we can have a war with Russia (Ukraine as our proxy). More money for defense contractors and the military. The military says they could not win a war against Russia or China, essentially begging for more money.
As a Vietnam vet, I am of the opinion that we should rein in in our military-industrial complex. Biden is a total nincompoop, but we don’t have alternatives.
