Daniel Connell: Electoral process broken; let’s figure out how to fix it
Re “Term limits, now” (Letters, June 21): The plea for Congressional term limits is on the right track. How about this: Limit U.S. Senators to two six-year terms and House members to three three-year terms. As for the Presidency, the Confederate Constitution of 1860 got it right. It limited its president to a single six-year term and gave him the power of line-item vetoes. To return some sanity to elections, I would limit campaigning to 30 days and make them publicly funded, eliminating the need for donations and the influence of the very rich. There would be no more phoney so-called “debates” nor those insulting TV ads. Instead the campaign would be limited to 10 town-hall meetings in state capitals selected by lottery attended by the nominated candidates.
The electoral college would be abolished. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t believe our republican form of government is being undermined? It is time for a national conversation on our electoral process.
