Joan Lewis: River cleanup laudable, but don’t forget Backcountry Horsemen
Re “Man assembles cleanups along Tuolumne River” (Page A1, June 15): I read with interest your recent article regarding the extensive work done by Operation 9-2-99 to clean up the mess surrounding the Tuolumne River. I applaud Chris Guptill’s work.
However, I was very disappointed to see such extensive coverage on one person’s project and just a small blurb regarding the really extensive work done by Backcountry Horsemen. I am a proud member of this hardworking group and they have provided countless volunteer hours cleaning up this area so the public can once again enjoy this beautiful area. The river has seen the return of some beavers and the trails are once again becoming safe and accessible for all.
I would like to see the efforts of Debra Mason and Backcountry Horsemen applauded not only for this project but for the thousands of hours they put in the high Sierra to keep the trails open and clean for all – hikers and bicyclists as well as horsemen.
