E.R. Gomez: Some churches turn followers against those in other denominations

Re “More Latinos finding a ‘new family’ in evangelical churches” (Page G1, June 14): We cannot deny that the Catholic church is losing more followers to evangelical denominations, and one reason is the lack of attention the church pays to people on drugs, in gangs and alcoholics. The majority of persons fleeing to the evangelicals are in this category, a place where they can convive and relate to one another and share their experiences.

There is often resentment among their “primary families” that they have virtually abandoned. After becoming evangelicals, they often attack verbally, using God as a shield, believing everybody is a sinner – especially if that person(s) happens to be from a different denomination.

Some persons using Facebook share “news” from conservative or religious websites to defame or twist news about religious leaders, especially the leader of the Catholic church and the President of the United States, whom they accuse of being the antichrist. The evangelical doctrine needs to advocate harmony instead of the opposite. What this world needs is peace, not war.
