Letters to the editor | Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020: Howze and Harder yard signs

Judging candidates by campaign signs

I ride my bike about seven miles each day in the northeast area of Modesto, enjoying an early morning ride in the cool morning breeze. I notice political campaign signs in the front yards of several homes. There are so many in favor of Ted Howze and so few in favor of Josh Harder. I was surprised at the campaign sign numbers being so different since letters to The Bee are overwhelming in favor of Harder.

I am undecided as to who will get my vote in November, however, judging by the yard signs, “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”

Harder fights for all of us

I have been watching Congressman Josh Harder and the hard work he is doing in our communities. Harder knows healthcare is a necessity and he will fight to make sure we have access to our healthcare needs with the coronavirus and the vaccine when it comes. He will also fight to protect our hard-earned Social Security. Harder has proven his commitment to the Central Valley by once again getting the water development funding bill to include millions for our water storage projects.

I see Josh problem-solving the huge challenges in our communities, from homelessness, to distributing food and masks, to finding a pathway for Dreamers to citizenship. Harder is rolling up his sleeves and fighting for us in Washington. Harder wants the best for Democrats and Republicans in the Valley. He is innovative, compassionate and committed.

Congressman Harder cares about helping people. I will vote for Josh Harder; my faith demands it of me.

Bird inspires others

I support Lindsey Bird for Yosemite Community College District, Area 6.

As a member of our diverse community, I envision higher education for all who desire it. After retiring from my teaching career, I volunteered at Davis High School where I met Lindsey and other dedicated teachers in the exemplary Language Institute. I taught 36 years and Lindsey inspired me with her character, strength and passion. She was an exceptional role model for the students. She encouraged the students’ dreams of higher education and she helped them achieve it. Lindsey worked tirelessly with students, teachers, staff and community leaders, challenging them to think of alternative ways for these students to succeed through equity.

Lindsey Bird will be an asset to the YCCD board. She has the vision, voice and commitment for the challenges ahead.

Richards knows value of education

As adjunct professors at Modesto Junior College, my husband Scott and I are following the YCCD trustee race and are pleased to support Milton Richards for YCCD Area 3.

We met Milt and his wife, Turlock Mayor Amy Bublak, while working with Amy at the Modesto Police Department. Milt has a passion for higher education, working in the field for over 30 years as an adjunct professor, administrator and student, earning BS, MS and doctoral degrees at West Virginia University. He understands the value of education and will fight to keep college affordable and accessible to all.

Modesto should promote safety

Re “If indoor dining continues, city will fine Velvet Grills $1,000 a day each” (Front Page, Aug. 30): I am appalled by Modesto Mayor Ted Brandvold’s stance on restaurants such as the Velvet Grill serving customers inside in defiance of the state’s pandemic restrictions. His attitude comes down to “who cares?” and “not our responsibility.”

I care, and so does everyone who wants to see this public health crisis over as soon as possible, so kids can go back to school, businesses can reopen and we can socialize freely. And it is the city’s responsibility to do everything possible to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Add Brandvold’s abdication of his sworn duty to uphold the law to his continued loyalty to GOP congressional candidate Ted Howze, and it’s time to send him packing in November. He’s a disgrace to our city.
