Letters to the editor | Wednesday, July 22, 2020: Stanislaus leaders put us in a COVID hole
Local leaders bear some blame
Instead of reacting and complaining against the governor’s order to keep our schools safe, maybe we should ask the county supervisors and superintendents how we got to such an infected situation to begin with. Much of this could have been avoided if our leaders enforced and initiated control and mask mandates earlier. Our cavalier attitude has cost school children undue hardships.

Howze won’t put up with nonsense
I have spoken with Ted Howze, Republican candidate for Congress. He is outspoken in his opposition to the lawlessness that has become prevalent and supports our police departments. He believes in the rule of law and need to have robust, effective law enforcement to counter criminals. He is opposed to new laws and regulations imposed on police departments by Democratic mayors that restrict enforcement of established laws and put us in jeopardy of being harmed by others.
It has become apparent to me that a vote for Ted Howze is a vote for law and order.

Harder works for our farmers
I always thought farmers and climate change were opposites. But our congressman, Josh Harder, wants to help farmers fight climate change through a bill in Congress called The Farm Act—The Future of Agricultural Resiliency and Modernization.
This is just one of the many bills Congressman Harder has introduced in his short time in Congress. We are very lucky to have him in District 10.

What’s to like about Trump?
What are some qualities we would like in a president? Intelligence, empathy, morality and honesty are a few.
These words certainly do not describe Donald Trump. A better description would include the following: narcissist, stupid, racist, divider, immoral, liar, misogynist, and corrupt.
Our standing internationally and domestically is at an all-time low because of our current leader. He continues to play the racist hate card to appeal to his base. He tells us he has defeated COVID-19, and with him at the helm, there is smooth sailing ahead. With an estimated 20,000 lies during his 3 1/2 years in office, he will try to reach 30,000 to maintain his seat in the Oval Office. He desperately needs to remain there because it is his stay-out-of-jail card.
With Putin’s help again, he could begin his second term in January. With the help of an informed, critical thinking electorate, he will begin his first term in prison.
Jim Hoagland, Ripon
His performance is proof
Re “Get over Trump’s win already” (Letters, July 19): The writer has it wrong. We have accepted that Trump won. We’ve gotten over that part. But every day, by word and action, Trump proves that he is unfit to serve as president. He is a national disgrace. This is the part we’re not over and never will be. Americans who have gotten over this part are the real problem, not the rest of us.

No more exploiting students
Are mold and asbestos in classrooms and unsafe drinking water no longer a concern since CTA was unsuccessful in yet another money grab from the taxpayers with Prop. 13? Next time we heard from CTA was another commercial reporting another horror story if the governor failed to fully fund public schools. Why do teachers care so much? Monies above required reserves are up for grabs, so to speak. Instead of repaying bonds early, CTA can fight for salary and benefit increases.
It’s time to stop exploiting our children in the name of education. This is nothing more than high-class begging and looting of taxpayers. The pea always starts under the middle shell, but seldom ends up there. Shame on teachers who play the game instead of educating the public you are meant to serve.
