Richard Cato: Why would our representative turn away jobs for our state?

In the bad, good old days of Washington politics, the best way to keep getting elected was to keep some, or a lot of money flowing to the folks back home. Money equals jobs, equals some hope of prosperity.

That’s all changed. Our esteemed representative has decided that California doesn’t need a multibillion-dollar infrastructure project to potentially benefit the entire state. No glory at having been the visionary to bring true high-speed rail to California and the U.S. California doesn’t need more new jobs. Progress can wait for now, we need more talk about family values and getting government out of our lives.

And The Bee seems to be OK with this. A representative who is fighting against our state, not for our state. Spare me the arguments over all the shortcomings. In the old days a skilled politician would have gotten those guys together and found a way to bargain with them so they would shut up and take the money. If we can put a man on the moon in less than 10 years, we can build the next generation transportation marvel in the same time.
