Mitt Romney stood tall
To my surprise there was one Republican who rose to the occasion and did the right thing: Mitt Romney, the only honest and fair Republican in the Senate. He did what he was elected to do — working for the people of this country no matter which party they support. His fellow senators were so afraid and feared what Trump and Fox would say about them that they hid under their desks like cowards.
Mitt Romney will survive the rhetoric and garbage that Trump and Fox are throwing at him. He has his strong faith, a backbone, and the will to continue working for the betterment of all Americans.

Biden column missed mark
“Watching Bernie in the Senate: Could this really be happening?” (Page 6A, Feb. 5) wasn’t exactly flattering, but it was certainly amusing and mostly reported what Dana had seen with his own eyes. “Examining the good and bad of Joe Biden” (Page 6A, Feb. 4) wasn’t funny, nor did Jay see Biden-Ukraine reporting with his own eyes. No one did, because it didn’t happen that way. I rechecked sources of information about Joe, his son Hunter, and Burisma. Each confirmed that no wrongdoing was ever found. If sometimes-troubled Hunter used poor judgment, well, we historically haven’t held relatives to the same high standard as the office holder. Remember Billy Carter? Neil Bush?
There is a near-constant need to correct innuendoes, false equivalencies, and lies. Working people and young parents, especially, don’t have time for this. Reporters must get worn down.
To be clear, a number of conservative writers are smart and conscientious. When I see their names, I’m happy to read their work. However, a Jay Ambrose type can twist facts into fiction. Joe Biden is not my preferred candidate. But he deserves to be treated fairly. We all do.

Super fan loves her 49ers
Re “Modesto woman has loved 49ers since their founding” (Front Page, Feb. 2): I thank The Modesto Bee for making my mother’s Super Bowl Sunday so very special. Seeing her on the front page proudly “reppin’ her boyz” was the highlight of her day. While our team lost (she fired the coach and then relented the next day — no worries, Coach Shanahan), our time together this season was magical. Who knew our team would do so well, let alone go to the Super Bowl? Thank you to The Bee and the San Francisco 49ers and all the locals who left such sweet comments under the story online.
My mother, Laura Crocco Shaw, is one of a kind — smart, kind, loving and devout. She is truly a part of the Greatest Generation. Thank you for honoring her love for her team.

Waterford’s Krause will be missed
Waterford has lost a true pillar and giant of our community.
Ken Krause should be remembered as one of the greatest public servants in the history of Waterford. He served selflessly as a volunteer, community servant, member of the Lions Club and other organizations, a member of the City Council and our vice mayor. Serving our town came as easy to him as breathing air. It flowed through his kind and gentle soul like blood through his veins. Waterford and the world is a little darker without him today. But Waterford and the world will always be brighter and a better place because of the life and example he left for us all. He was my dear friend and he will be missed. He will be missed at local sporting events, missed at Lions Club events, and missed when the next call goes out for people needed to serve.
May we always remember his example and his legacy of selfless service to our town. Ken loved Waterford.
Ken, my friend, godspeed, sir; you go with the love, respect and admiration of the town you loved so much.
Joshua Whitfield, Waterford
