Marilyn and Chuck Rowland: Memorial Day service great, for those who saw it

On May 25th my husband I rode our bikes to Acacia Memorial Park, as we have done for many years, since we are a military family. The Memorial Day event was the best we’ve attended in several years. Why? Several reasons: lots of representation from local groups. The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts were involved, and there was a real band playing appropriate patriotic music. The Scouts presented the colors, and The American Legion presented the traditional 21-gun salute, followed by taps. The speeches were brief and to the point. We especially enjoyed Mayor Garrad Marsh telling about his Navy experience.

About 150 Modestans attended the half-hour event. Yes, we know this was a holiday weekend, but it seems a pretty small turnout considering the importance of remembering those who have given their lives in the service of our country.
