Gurmanpreet Kaur: Society forces us toward college, but there are options

Whenever the term “conformity” appears, everyone thinks of a coward or someone who is too “chicken” to make their own decision. Why are we scared to make our own decisions?

Today, we have created a society filled with freedom and acceptance. We claim ourselves as free and independent to the world. Free and independent in what sense? Americans make their decisions based on others around them. Judging people by the clothing they wear. Due to these norms, many individuals have given up their own beliefs.

We claim to push each person to where ever their dreams lead them. Then why do we judge the person who decides to enter the workforce instead of going to college? Some high school students do not even know why and for what they are going to college. But everyone is making college seem like the only viable option to success, so we go along with it. Why does no one ever tell the story of the person who obtained a college degree and ended up working at a fast-food restaurant? We don’t wish to be an outcast, so we give in.
