Tom Reed: Downey High, best choir program in the nation

Thomas Downey High School Choirs, on May 2, traveled to Fullerton to compete against choirs from throughout California¸ Arizona and Alberta, Canada. Both choirs, Knightengales (girls advanced) and the Madrigals (advanced coed) earned gold standard rankings, meaning both choirs are in the top 10 percent of choirs in the entire nation. The Knightengales placed first in their division. The Madrigals placed fourth. The two choirs took home the choir sweepstakes award (top two choir combined scores). Even one of the judges mentioned the great reputation of the Thomas Downey High School Choir.

The young men and women should be congratulated for their dedication, attending either zero period or eighth period and performing for many families, businesses, churches and rest homes. Most students participate in many clubs, teams, school plays, school activities and represent our city and county with tremendous pride. Earlier this year, four choir members were selected to the state honor choir. The choirs will greatly miss Mary Ann Vlach’s guidance.

We look forward to a new choir director as the choirs are an integral part to the school spirit and pride of Downey High for many decades.

Tom Reed, Modesto
