Vickie Killingsworth: Hanson left out some of the worst offenders
Re: “No law, no civilization” (Opinions, May 10): Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. That is the essence of Victor Davis Hanson’s column about lawlessness and the demise of American civilization. In his examples of tax dodging he indicts many Democrats and liberals for their laxity in paying taxes, saying they get away with it because of “political considerations.” He conveniently leaves out all of those who use offshore accounts to shelter their money from U.S. tax obligations. He also somehow forgets to mention those who brought on the Wall Street debacle of 2008 and did not go to prison.
He mourns that “our laws are becoming as politicized as our tax system,” but fails to mention the Citizens United decision by the so-called Supreme Court that makes a mockery of democracy by allowing the super rich to buy politicians and political favors that further enrich them so that they can eat gold encrusted hamburgers, wear diamond covered shoes, drive gold-plated cars, afford $40 million watches and talk on $16 million cell phones. Pathological conspicuous consumption by the super rich is the one concept he accurately mentioned.
