Karen Ohl: Got to be a better way than fake grass

Some people are getting artificial turf lawns in response to the drought, but I wondered how you would clean them without hosing them down. Mother Nature is very messy. And a Bee article Sunday talked about using bleach on a turf lawn for dog waste.

Smell the bleach instead of the roses?

Apparently you do hose them down, use chemicals, vacuum and brush them on a constant basis. Also, artificial turf won’t give back to living creatures or air quality. And eventually the turf would need replaced.

“Water wise” plants, which are less of a headache to maintain, seem the better choice to me. In Southern California, succulents such as Rock Roses, which store their own water, are planted around houses for fire protection.
