Gordon Chan: Make Common Core tests do double duty

Re “Don’t ax school exit exams” (Opinions, April 22): I agree with your editorial that the exit exam should not be ended until a new exit exam can be developed and aligned with the Common Core. You wrote that the exit exam worked because 95 percent of high school grads passed.

Because of the Common Core, all California school boards, administrators, schools and teachers are under pressure to adopt and implement new curriculum and teaching methods to ensure that all students are college and career ready for this century.

Why not put a little pressure on our students by making the Common Core exam the exit exam as well? The state could save a great deal of money by not creating and administering another test during school time. I have been arguing that students do not have an incentive to do well on the high-stake tests. I believe students and teachers would rise to the challenge presented by Common Core.
