John Bohling: We don’t really know what Trump said, but Obama said worse
So President Trump has been unprovedly accused by a political hack-man Sen. Dick Durbin of saying something behind closed doors. As a result of that accusation, the world is rising up and demanding an apology. What did Trump supposedly say, that some groups of people are unwelcome because of their color, or that a commonly used phrase over many years (chain-migration) has suddenly acquired bad implications?
Well no, the term chain-migration is so commonly used that Durbin just hasn’t been paying attention. And exactly what was said about where immigrants have been coming from can never be known unless a recording is produced. The White House has denied the specifics, but that seems to assuage no one on the left.
I would look for an apology from President Trump about when ex-President Obama apologizes, and explains exactly what he meant, when in 2012 he told Russian President Medvedev on a live mic: “This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility,” to which Medvedev said he understands and will transmit that information to Vladimir. (Uh, BTW, is there some collusion here?) What was that all about, Mr. Obama? Missile defense, Crimea, Syria, Iran, ISIS or what?
