Don Swatman: Forget those braying donkeys, things are going great in America
In 1828 his opponents called President Andrew Jackson a “jackass,” another name for a donkey. He liked the idea because a donkey is stubborn and Jackson had a lot to hide. Later, cartoonist Thomas Nast invented the elephant for the other party.
Today, let’s put a tail on the donkey as many blindfolded kids have done for years and listen to the trumpet of the elephant signaling all the good things that have happened to our country this year.
