Hector Zavala: Bee’s attempt at humor goes up in smoke
Re “Burning questions for 420 day” (Opinions, April 20): What a pathetic attempt to derail the inevitable.
Where should I start? How about the fact that you displace blame for the laughable medical marijuana laws in this state from the law itself to those trying to abide by it. A law whose loopholes are taken advantage of by law enforcement, insurance companies and employers far more often than any stereotypical stoner The Bee could ever invent. Your condescending comments regarding potential legislation missed its comedic mark and only illustrates the typical conservative approach to a serious topic. While you crack jokes, people are abusing prescription pills in record numbers. While you whine about not meeting tax expectations (more like over $60 million as opposed to the hoped for $100 million, by the way), peaceful people sit in jail for non-violent cannabis related “crimes.”
While you encourage recreational drinking, alcoholism is destroying families; drunk drivers are killing people, and drunk women are passing out behind the wheel on the freeway! And by the way, kids are getting their hands on cannabis now and much more easily than say if it were legalized. How? Because last I heard, street dealers don’t check IDs.
Get over yourselves, Bee!
