Carl Hillberg: Farmers make cost of eating affordable for all

Re “Water Crisis: Is it time for California to regulate crop selections?” (Opinion, March 29): When Los Angeles Times columnist George Skelton (“Is it time for California to regulate crop selections?” Page D1, March 29) enjoys his showers and green lawns but doesn’t get to eat the economical food that San Joaquin farmers provide, maybe he will face reality.

Farmers use of available water is based on sound economics, not on some bureaucrat’s idea of what we should plant. Our present situation is the result of environmental and fish priorities that are responsible largely for the present lack of water. Taxpayer money that should have been spent to upscale our water storage facilities was used by our governor for his pet projects, twin tunnels and bullet trains, which the majority of the public don’t want.

Carl Hillberg, Turlock
