David Eichert: Republicans want to triple my tax payments; Denham doesn’t care

I am a graduate student and have worked incredibly hard to get to where I am. As such, I was shocked to find out that the new Republican tax plan would sharply increase tax rates for people like me – up to 300 percent! The same tax plan would also cut taxes on Wall Street corporations by billions of dollars, even though none of those corporations are located in the Central Valley.

In response, I joined Rep. Jeff Denham’s recent telephone town hall and asked why he would be in favor of something that benefits Wall Street elites and not local residents. Instead of getting an answer, I found myself silenced after explaining my situation! My mic was cut off and I was told by a man from South Carolina that corporations would create a job for me!

I know exactly what I want to do with my life, but I’m terrified that I might have to drop out early if my taxes increase by 300 percent. I am disgusted that Rep. Denham does not have the courage to stand up for local citizens like myself who are chasing the American Dream.

David Eichert, Turlock
