Charles R. Shetron: Get rid of SALT deductions even in California
The GOP tax plan framework is a great first step toward real, pro-growth tax reform. An element of that framework is the repeal of the state and local tax deduction (SALT), a provision which allows state and local taxes to be deducted from federal taxes.
As someone who lives in a state with relatively high local and/or state taxes (income and/or property taxes), the removal of the SALT deduction would encourage California legislators to cut taxes, reduce spending and encourage businesses to start or move to California.
Rep. Jeff Denham should support removing the SALT deduction and use the savings to cut taxes another 16 percent across the board. That cut, plus doubling of the standard deduction and lowering rates, will provide relief to all taxpayers and not just top income earners in high-tax states.
