Lee Grover: Gilman will work to make MID more transparent
During my years in Modesto I have never felt compelled to write a letter to editor. Recently, this forum has become a battleground for the only contested race in this year’s election: Stu Gilman vs. Jake Wenger to represent Modesto Irrigation District division 4. I can’t help but notice the tenor of some pro-Wenger articles look more like character attacks on Gilman than Wenger endorsements.
Having known Stu for many years, I would say character is probably his strongest qualification. He is running because others have asked him to. You may disagree with his politics but, in my opinion, you cannot malign his character without bringing into question your motivations.
More to the point of this election: Gilman’s call is for transparency. As a matter of policy, I believe transparency in government is a good thing. Glenn Greenwald says “Secrecy is the linchpin of abuse of power. ... Transparency is the only real antidote.” John Maxwell says “Transparency breeds legitimacy.” I seriously doubt if many current ratepayers would use the word “transparent” to describe MID. I include myself on that list. Mother Teressa said, “Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway.” I will be voting for Gilman.
