Henrietta Sparkman: Yes on S assures our excellent libraries remain solvent

As you cast your vote in this election remember the importance of Measure S to save our libraries.

Libraries are one of the cornerstones of our democracy providing equity and a multitude of services for all. We are fortunate in Stanislaus County to have an excellent library. Your yes vote is a renewal of an eighth-cent tax that has had a Yes vote for 20 years and will guarantee funding for the next 12 years. For less than what a family typically would spend on one movie outing, take out dinner or fast food stop, our libraries provide countless opportunities and resources for all of us in our communities throughout Stanislaus county.

An independent citizen oversight committee will make certain the funds are spent as approved by voters. Those against any additional taxes can exercise your right to question elected officials making decisions on the budgets and how taxes are spent. If you want viable, progressive and vibrant communities in our county, vote yes for S and help continue what is important, relevant and serves all Stanislaus citizens. To quote George Dawson, libraries are “The diary of the human race.”
