Jerry DeYoung: Retired teachers never quit caring

If you can read this letter, maybe you should thank a teacher. The week of Nov. 5-11 is California Retired Teachers Week, and we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those teachers who not only taught us but shaped us in our youth.

Even after leaving their classrooms, teachers continue to have a positive impact on their communities. In Stanislaus County, retired teachers have tallied 20,698 hours of volunteer activities ranging from tutoring, church, youth clubs, driving people to appointments, etc. That’s worth $538,148 to the community! That is from only 9 percent of over 900 members reporting hours logged.

So in addition to thanking your former teacher, why not also volunteer your time to your community? Working together we can all make a difference!

Jerry DeYoung, President, Division 38 of CalRTA, Oakdale
