Richard Cato: Healthcare would be simple if we took out the profit motive

Who would think our government could create a system for buying insurance that was more convoluted and stressing than filing taxes or buying a car?

Healthcare is not about profit. Healthcare is not deductibles, copays, levels of care named for precious metals and should be a condition of employment. Healthcare is about seeing a doctor when you are sick. Healthcare is about being treated for injuries or illness. Healthcare is about getting the best advice available to keep yourself healthy and having someone whose only concern is your welfare.

All this dancing around is trying to avoid the reality of universal health care. Look around the world. Every other modern economy has figured this out. Why are we still wandering around in hopes of inventing a new wheel?

How much easier would it be to live in a world where you go to the doctor when you are ill, you pay a modest fee for the service and when you need medical intervention you won’t fear for your economic well being? We can have that. We just need to make it a priority. People first, not profits.

Richard Cato, Modesto
