Gay Turner: We need new ideas to fight this drought
The water crisis could be the new normal. The governor wants us to use 25 percent less water than last year. And a lot of money has been allocated to help alleviate some of the state’s worst water problems. So what are we doing about it in Modesto? Here are some borrowed ideas someone may be able to do something with. There may even be some business opportunities.
▪ Offer xeriscape seminars.
▪ Have drought resistant and California native plant sections in area nurseries.
▪ Have a sprinkler specialist available to advise the public.
▪ Implement a cash-for-grass program.
▪ Start a drive-a-dirty car campaign.
▪ Set up water leak audits for homes and businesses.
▪ Offer instruction on “gray-water” collection and reuse.
▪ Have a water efficiency expert for hire.
A spineless spy on water wasters and a brick in the toilet are not going to hack it this time. We need an exchange of ideas and some effective measures to make a difference.
