Ron Jeske: Angry mayors acting like children

Re “Mayors move against ag vote” (Page A1, April 5): The Easter morning edition of The Bee tells the story of disappointed mayors who now want to oust one of their own, whom they chose for a policy committee on agriculture conservation policies involving developers and sprawling cities. Now, now; cool it off. You cannot continue to assault the industry that sustains life around here without paying a price, and the $7,305 per acre fee is chump change compared to what developers will sell property for when they are finished. That figure will surely not purchase an acre for agriculture preservation, as farmers are refocusing on crops that get better prices and they would laugh in your face if offered such a pittance.

The article on the subject asked, “Can six cities be wrong?” The answer is yes! It is long past the time when politicians should have begun looking at the reality of life in this state and this region. There are limits, regrettably, on many things. To ignore them is wrong, and Mayor Matt Beekman of Hughson should not be ousted from his committee because doing the right thing for the right reason “upsets” the few.

Get over it, mayors (children).

Ron Jeske, Modesto
