Lisa McDermott: Region has a world-class arts museum, in Turlock

Re “Modesto needs art museum” (Letters, March 26): I couldn’t agree more that our communities are deserving of places to experience a variety of the arts “at the highest level.” I would like to point out that our region does, in fact, have a stellar venue for exhibiting art: The Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock.

Since 2011 the Carnegie has served our San Joaquin Valley region with exhibitions by world-renowned masters such as Ansel Adams, Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas and Joan Miro. These are exhibits you might expect to only see in Sacramento or San Francisco. Additionally, we support our local community of artists by providing a place to exhibit throughout the year. These shows combined have been viewed by more than 8,000 school children from Turlock, Modesto and our immediate area, but also from as far as Sonora, Mariposa, Los Banos and Stockton.

The Carnegie is proud to partner with Modesto’s Mistlin Gallery on our current joint exhibition, the Central California Arts Showcase, and look forward to a time when even more opportunities are available in the Central Valley. We should all welcome the addition of more venues for the arts!
