Sharon Brandt and Carmella Womack: Sympathy for owners of decrepit apartment building

Re “Apartment building owners fined $60,000” (Front Page, July 30): Now that you have crucified the owners of the downtown apartment complex by writing four front-page articles about their property and the poor tenants, why are you not asking the city of Modesto what they are going to do with the $60,000 in fines the Board of Building Appeals imposed on the owners, especially after board members said they “are sympathetic with the tenants plight but such help is outside of the board’s authority.”

Really! So you condemn the building, have the owners evict 80 tenants without even giving the owners extra time to make more repairs while trying to sell the property; charge the owners an outrageous fine and now it is outside the board’s authority to help the tenants.

So again, what is the city going to do with the $60,000?
