George Kilian: What gives with the raises? Must be the taxpayers

Re “School officials get big raises” (Page A-1, March 22): There’s an acronym younger folks use (WTF) when they just can’t make sense of something. That’s about all I could come up with a after reading the story on the raises given by the Stanislaus County Board of Education recently.

In two years, the superintendent received raises of almost 39 percent. Why? Because some other folks in different counties make more! There were a couple platitudes thrown out about how he’s doing a good job and that he’s humble, but really, the reason was that others make more. That’s it.

What brings this absurd logic into even better focus was the huge raise given to a superintendent who is retiring! Just think about it, this guy has worked for 20 or 30 years, was obviously happy with his job and salary (he never left), but now that he’s retiring he gets a huge raise because, again, someone else makes more! I’d like to go on, but my head is about to explode. WTF!
