Dan McLeod: Presbyterian acceptance of gay marriage troubling

I was informed that the Presbyterian Church has accepted gay marriage. In a secular sense I have no opinion on gay marriage. I see all secular “marriage” as a social contract recognized by the government, granting benefits and burdens. If gays want to have the same right to contract, so be it.

However, as a Christian and life-long Presbyterian I am deeply saddened by this decision. The Presbyterian Church has abandoned a fundamental tenet of Christianity. It is not that I do not have respect for the gay community. I encourage gays to pursue Christ and enjoy a relationship with God. The truth is that if the line before the gates of St. Peter forms up on merit, there will be plenty of gays ahead of me.

For me, it is a question of marriage before God and not the laws of man. Who we are as children of God is inextricably founded on one man and one woman in bonded marriage. There is no other union before the Lord. The laws of man cannot change that which is eternal. The lesson? Put your faith in God and not the religions of man.
