Fr. Misael Avila: VP says he stands with life, but supports splitting families and hurting planet
At the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, Vice President Mike Pence said the Trump administration “stands with the vulnerable, the aged, the infirm and the unborn.” I just don’t understand how he can say that when thousands of people are going to lose medical coverage and many seniors and poor people are going to be affected by the dramatic changes to Medicaid if President Trump insists on repealing instead of improving the Affordable Care Act.
How can he stand with the vulnerable and not make human rights abuses a priority in his administration? How can he reduce the number of refugees being accepted into our country every year?
The Vice President also said that our time requires “leaders who can help bring healing to our nation.” How can our President bring healing to so many families who have been separated by his inhumane immigration enforcement policies? Many of these immigrants being deported have not committed any crimes. Pence also said that “life is winning in America.” How can he say that when our president withdrew our country from the Paris Climate Agreement? How can life be winning when we are destroying our planet? Please, Mr. Vice President, don’t contradict yourself.
