Michael A. Clarke: Mad King Donald is ruining America

The United States is under siege – not from without, but, sadly, from within. With Mad King Donald enthroned, his hirelings feel free to pursue their efforts to wreck the great things about our country.

Ill-informed zealots plan to destroy our public schools by issuing vouchers that use taxpayer funds to send students to private and religious schools. A commission to investigate non-existent “voter fraud” is a smokescreen to hide Republican efforts to pass voter-suppression laws that take away the right to vote from certain groups. The plot to take away healthcare from millions, disguised as “repeal and replace Obamacare,” is actually a financial-health plan for the rich, a hand-out that dramatically reduces their taxes.

Regulations protecting us from pollution, false advertising and unsafe food are under attack. Religious fundamentalists claiming to be Christians support political efforts that hurt the poor, interfere with women’s health needs and legalize discrimination. The President offers our publicly owned parks and monuments to industries bent on cutting down our forests and drilling on our lands for profit. The wall between church and state is ignored while a wall between “us” and “them” is praised.

It’s time to join the resistance.
