Doug Highiet and Joyce Gandelman: Denham stepped up for women around the world

American Jewish World Service, the Jewish community of Stanislaus County and women and girls throughout the world would like to thank Rep. Jeff Denham for becoming one of the original co-sponsors of the International Violence Against Women Act, which was reintroduced March 6 to the House of Representatives.

For the first time in our history, a U.S. Global Women’s Issues Ambassador was named to ensure the voices of women and girls are part of high-level diplomatic and foreign policy discussions. IVAWA is critically needed because the U.S. Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Gender Based Violence, an unprecedented effort to address violence against women and girls globally, is set to expire in August unless we act now to make them permanent.

Our Yarmulkes are off to Rep. Denham for stepping up and becoming an integral part of this important act.

Doug Highiet, President;

Joyce Gandelman, Vice President,

Congregation Beth Shalom, Modesto
