Bill Jaques: Gallo suit another example of state overreach

Re “State sues Gallo Glass” (Page A1, March 3): I have never worked for Gallo, nor has any member of my family; I do, however, on occasion use their products. As a many-year Modesto resident and native Californian, I’ve always seen Gallo as a very reputable company and a good steward of both the land and environment – not to mention the unending great things they do for our community. Our state officials admit “no evidence that consuming wine from these bottles poses a health threat,” yet they are proceeding with the lawsuit. I guess this is an example of “anything for a buck.”

California continues to wring its hands and wonder why businesses leave the state for friendlier business climates. I would encourage the management at Gallo to find a nice friendly “right to work state,” and slowly and methodically move their glass plant to that state. To bad they can’t transplant the grapes, too.

Bill Jaques, Modesto
