Donna Thompson: Afraid of trucks? Then get off the roads
I need to ask the writer of “Too many of those big scary trucks” (Letters, Dec. 1) if she enjoys the basics of eating or wearing clothes or even driving her car? How does she thinks products get from point A to point B? Osmosis? No, trucks! She wants more transport by trains. Alrighty now, how would the product get from the railyard to the warehouse or distribution center and then to the stores? If it wasn’t for the trucking industry this country would grind to a halt.
She claims nearly all accidents are caused by trucks. She needs to listen to, or ride with, a truck driver and witness what he or she experiences on a daily basis. What the writer doesn’t understand is that most accidents that occur between trucks and cars are almost always caused by the 4-wheeler. Most car drivers don’t understand that you can’t stop 80,000 pounds of inertia on a dime. When cars cut off a truck there will be consequences.
If the writer is so scared to drive, I suggest she turn in her driver’s license and hang up her keys. Frankly, she is the type of driver who would cause an accident.
