Denise Cannistraci: American workforce has been gutted as jobs move away

Re “Job market mystery: Where are the men?” (Page 5D, Nov. 27): Seems the author has stumbled upon an answer to our male workers seeming lack of ambition. Do people subscribe to this nonsense? I’m surprised The Bee didn’t publish a corresponding piece stating the obvious: The workforce in America has been gutted over the past 30 to 40 years. Production moved off-shore, auto assembly moved, steel plants shuttered. Add the insane policy of allowing nearly a million immigrants per year into a country already scrambling for a job to support their families.

I grew up in a robust America; I knew I could always work if I applied myself. Thirty years ago I was making $10 an hour. If I went job hunting today what would I hope for? $10 an hour! This falls not on the men mentioned in the article, but truly on our leaders who do not have the will to fight to keep manufacturing jobs here and the lack of will to say stop bringing so many non-citizens. And we wonder what’s wrong with our men. Lots of illness in the mentioned group, you bet. And anyone’s surprised? Would The Bee take a stand for American citizens?

Editor’s note: The Department of Homeland Security reports that around 1 million people obtain permanent-resident (green card) status each year.
