Mike Simpson: They didn’t think this bag law through
Modesto we have a problem. Went to Walmart and picked up one item $20, did not get a bag. Walked out past an associate; after I passed her, I said “I did pay for this” jokingly. She called me back in, ask for my receipt. I could have easily stolen it.
Later I bought a bottle of brandy. Said no bag, the clerk gave me the bottle to carry out. I reminded her that it’s against the law to carry the bottle without a bag and the store cannot force you to buy one. Walmart could have gotten a fine from ABC. We used a clear produce bag, still not within letter of the law.
It would be nice if the authors of the law would put some effort into what it effects.
I hate stupidity and this whole deal reeks of it. When I go buy something I expect something to carry it in. I do not fill my car with old bags. Why can’t you do as we did and use them for other things around the house? Guess that was too hard to figure out for Californians.

Editor’s Note: According to California Alcoholic Beverage Control, there are no statewide rules or regulations requiring that alcoholic beverages be bagged after sale.
