James Schellman: There needs to be a signal and left-turn lane on Whitmore

I have lived in Modesto for a long time and have watched it grow into a large city. My complaint, and I am sure that many others have the same complaint, concerns Carpenter Road. I live out in the country and have traveled the road many times. I was very happy when they put a light at Hatch Road. It stopped a lot of back-ups, sometimes clear to Paradise Road. But the job was not complete. Whomever is responsible for traffic management should also have put in a light at Whitmore Avenue.

I have been stopped a few times in stop-and-go traffic trying to get home. But many times I am going north, coming into the city, and have watched the traffic get backed up almost to Hatch Road. I am sure that if you try to get to where you are going between 5 and 6 p.m. on any weekday you have felt the same frustration. It would be good for the air quality if a signal light with a left turn lane was in place at Whitmore.
