Denise Brown Ford: Trying to claw back bonuses a despicable act

Re “Guard soldiers forced to repay enlistment bonuses” (Page 5A, Oct. 23): Why should the men and women who fought for their country have to repay the bonuses and student loans they were given to re-enlist? These brave soldiers held up their end of the deal and the government needs to do the same! If the government wants to be repaid the $15.2 million, it needs to seek restitution from Army Master Sgt Toni Jaffe, the person convicted of fraud in this fiasco!

To all of the men and women who put their lives on the line, thank you for your service to our country. And to the government, you have done some really despicable things but you have outdone yourselves this time! Shame on you !

Denise Brown Ford, Modesto

Editor’s note: Defense Secretary Ash Carter has instructed the Defense Department to cease trying to collect repayment of the bonuses.
