Mike Caskey: Bee risks alienating Republicans with editorials that won’t change any minds

We get it! You despise Donald Trump and those who do not despise Trump. You dislike most, if not all things Republican. Why not despise the billions in California’s unfunded liability that will hurt taxpayers?

I don’t care for Trump, and the Republicans have shot themselves in the foot by nominating him. They own whatever comes to them.

Your only concern in a recent editorial supporting Clinton is the possibility of some violent backlash once she wins. I suspect that a perusal of your past editorials would find one or more that decry hate speech and deride those who produce such garbage. However, the venom that drips from many of your recent editorials would kill an elephant. Maybe that’s your intent. Your editorials are probably more polished than much of the junk that is coming from the other direction. That doesn’t make them any less vitriolic, and they will likely produce visceral rather than contemplative reactions.

Keep in mind, many “deplorables” do read and may react to your editorials with more than a simple “yes or no” at the ballot box, such as canceling their subscriptions.

You won’t sway anybody’s opinion as long as your editorial tone sounds like something from Trump.

Mike Caskey, Escalon

Editor’s note: The Bee has endorsed many Republicans over the last two election cycles in partisan and non-partisan offices, including Anthony Cannella, Vito Chiesa, Jim DeMartini, Cindy Marks, Bill O’Brien, Kristin Olsen, Terry Withrow and others.
