Richard Cato: Local Republicans demonstrate political cowardice

Re “Valley GOP leaders divided over Trump” (Front Page, Oct. 11): I was disappointed and dismayed by the response to questions about Donald Trump from county Republican leaders . It is beyond me how decent, intelligent political leaders can continue to support Trump given all the things he has done during his campaign.

In the beginning you could dismiss some of his antics due to inexperience and lack of political skills. Unfortunately, he has learned nothing and has shown no inclination to change. That has revealed a stunning lack of strategic thinking and knowledge of international affairs. How much more evidence do you need to persuade you he is completely unprepared for this office?

Republican convictions and so-called principles are broad, but do not run deep. They don’t disapprove of Trump for any other reason than they can’t approve of Clinton. This is political cowardice of the highest order.

I can’t believe our mayor is so busy he doesn’t follow politics and can’t make an assessment. Modesto is not that big or important a city that the mayor doesn’t have time to follow national election politics. That has to be the best cop-out of all.

Richard Cato, Modesto
