Bob Schmitz: Republicans, we need you; but not Trump
To my Republican friends: Please get your act together. As a white, WWII veteran and lifelong Democrat, I realize our country needs at least two viable political parties. By letting the tea party (aka, the no-compromise party; if-Obama-was-for-it, vote-it-down party) take over the Republican Party, Congress got practically nothing done. No form of government such as ours can long survive without compromise. Certainly, Democrats are not always right, but in the past they have been open to compromise.
The tea party mantra has been “our way or the highway.” Just who made the tea party always right? God? As a result Donald Trump happened. And if he gets elected (please God, no), it will be a very long time before people will forget the damage he will do if he follows through on what he says. Voters will blame the Republican Party, and justly so. This could just about kill the Republican Party if our nation survives Trump.
Our nation needs at least two viable political parties. Again, please get your act together.
