Al Kessler: Nothing unpatriotic in Trump’s low taxes
Donald Trump has been accused of some sinister crimes by paying the legal amount of income tax after an investment loss with a carry forward for many years. I quote Judge Learned Hand (1872-1961), who sat on the U.S. Court of Appeals.
“Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury; there is not even a patriotic duty to increase one’s taxes.” Over and over again the courts have said there is nothing sinister in arranging affairs so as to keep taxes as low as possible. ... Everyone does it, rich and poor alike; and all do right. Nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.”
I suggest the only people qualified to criticize Donald Trump are those who intentionally pay more income tax than required.
