Jim Bonetti: Identification should be required at polls
Is providing identification really a problem for minorities at the polls? This is a non-issue, in my opinion. The trip to the DMV for your driver's test, license or vehicle transfer, granted, is no picnic and trying at best for everybody, not just for minorities. If one can't get a driver's license, you can obtain a California ID card for sure, particularly for illegal aliens.
The DMV provides voter registration forms for your convenience. Why on earth would people say minority people are hindered or discouraged from voting? Most everyone is willing to provide ID or their sample ballot at the polls. It makes my job identifying voters easier and allows the line of voters to run smoother and faster.
I don't ask voters for ID. Some folks have an accent difficult to understand and I must ask for the spelling of their name and their street. For a few, not showing an ID seems to be very important to them. But before I can issue them a ballot, I must be able to identify them, right?
