Karen Gome: Salida’s kindness leaves warm glow despite hardship

We moved all over the United States when I was growing up, so when I met my husband and moved to his hometown of Salida, I instantly loved it. The same bus driver that took him to school, took our children to school. It’s been 25 years and I still feel the same way.

On Nov. 5, we had a horrible house fire and lost nearly everything. Though we have a long road ahead and we must start over, I wouldn’t do it anywhere else. Along with my amazing friends and family, people from Salida came running from every direction to help. It was a great comfort to know the firemen, including one of my son’s best friends. They showed up again the next day to see if we needed help with anything.

So many people from Salida donated and helped get us settled into a temporary place. I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness. I’ll point out this is the reason we fight so hard to just stay Salida.
