Edward J. Staley: Make those responsible for shoddy work fix it
Why have government oversee “megaprojects”? As a former president once said, “Government is the problem.”
If we must have the feds review another level of government, why pay for the original level? Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Walnut Creek, doesn’t get it. He is rightly complaining about the over-budget, over-tardy Bay Bridge. But his solution costs us even more and will delay projects even more. Why pay the people we hired to do the job if we have to pay other people to do it over? Make those hired originally do it. I did not read of anyone getting relieved of their duties for the mistakes on the Bay Bridge ... just some abysmal excuses and finger-pointing typical of the government-ese. Thanks to a free press, we know about it and we don’t need more incompetence by adding someone else to the taxpayers payroll.
After working for years with the agency responsible for highway visibility access, I suggest the first place to peek is Caltrans.
