Five people were killed and more than 30 people were injured when a bus crashed into several other cars on a highway in Virginia early on May 29, officials said.

The crash happened at about 2:35 a.m. ET in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Stafford County, the Virginia State Police said in a statement to USA TODAY.

An investigation indicates that traffic was slowing as it approached a work zone. The bus "failed to slow" and struck six other vehicles, state police said. The five people killed were all in cars hit by the bus. Thirty-four others were taken to area hospitals, including three with critical injuries, state police said.

Photos of the crash shared by state police show the bus with damage to its front after coming to a stop off the side of the road.

The crash is still under investigation and criminal charges are pending, police said in the statement. Multiple lanes were closed in the aftermath, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Information about the bus and its driver and identities of victims were not immediately released.
