Joe Biden made history this week by making California’s Kamala Harris his vice presidential pick. The former vice president’s decision to elevate one of his harshest critics on the campaign trail to the VP slot proved he’s ready for a brutal 2020 campaign against Donald Trump.
To some, Harris appeared to burn her bridges with Biden when she fiercely attacked his record on racial justice during the first Democratic primary debate in 2019. But Biden was apparently unfazed a clearly didn’t hold a grudge. Though her own presidential campaign fell apart, Biden has revived her political fortunes by putting her on the ticket.
In this episode of the California Nation Podcast, The Sacramento Bee Editorial Board discusses Biden’s history-making pick.
What does Biden’s choice say about his strategy against Trump? Will Harris’ historic candidacy boost turnout among key voter groups, including women and people of color? Will Trump’s attacks on Harris as “radical” and “nasty” work? And how does Biden’s pick affect the fates of other California Democrats with long-simmering presidential ambitions, like Gov. Gavin Newsom?
