Doug Aleson: Look at the whole history book, not just a few sad chapters
Re “Editorial promotes historical blindness” (Letters, March 19) exemplifies a misguided view of this country that encourages willful selective historical blindness! It is a relatively simple process to examine historical events in hindsight, but becomes far more complicated when considering and understanding the dynamics that existed during those times. Yes, the government has made its share of mistakes over the years, but to dwell on the negative while completely ignoring all of the good this great country has done is an extremely narrow-minded and simplistic view of our history!
The flag represents the pride of a nation and an affront to that symbol is understandably an affront to all the past and present patriots of this great land. Despite our flaws, I still believe the United States is the last best hope for mankind. And, by rejecting the caustic words of our new would-be opinion maker, I need to state that I still love my country and I am extremely proud to be an American!
Apparently, some of us in this country need to read and understand the entire history book.
