Rainstorm brings power outages, free sandbags in Modesto and Turlock
Heavy rain across Stanislaus County this week is prompting city officials in Modesto and Turlock to urge residents to prepare for flooding, power failures and traffic disruptions.
The city of Modesto on Thursday shared emergency contact numbers for storm-related issues, including street flooding, clogged storm drains and traffic signal outages.
Residents can report:
- Street flooding or clogged storm drains: 209-577-6200
- Traffic signal or streetlight outages: 209-342-2297
- City tree emergencies: 209-342-2253
For downed power lines or electrical outages in Modesto, officials say to contact the Modesto Irrigation District at 209-526-8222 or 888-997-8222. Life-threatening emergencies should be reported to 911.
Modesto also is offering free sandbags to residents at its self-serve site at the corner of Washington and Jefferson streets. Households may fill up to 20 sandbags. Residents must bring their own shovels. The city does not deliver sandbags.
Meanwhile in Turlock, city officials issued an urgent public safety announcement regarding power failures affecting multiple areas of town.
According to the city of Turlock, outages have impacted traffic signals near:
- Main Street
- Tully Road
- Soderquist Road
- Olive Avenue
- Christofferson Parkway
Officials said Osborn and Medeiros elementary schools were affected. Turlock Irrigation District is working to restore power.
Turlock residents can pick up free sandbags at 901 S. Walnut Road, limited to 10 bags per resident.
City officials are urging drivers to use caution when approaching intersections where traffic signals may be out.
